Oppo and OnePlus to use Google's Gemini in future AI phones

Oppo and OnePlus will integrate Google's Gemini models on future AI phones.

Oppo made several key AI-related announcements at the recent Google Cloud Next '24 conference.

First, Oppo and OnePlus issued a joint statement that they will be using Google's Gemini models in their various product lines to redefine the way their users interact with their phones.

Nicole Zhang, General Manager of AI Product at Oppo and OnePlus said:

Our deep collaboration with Google Cloud throughout our journey is pivotal. Google Cloud's open platform capabilities holds profound significance for OPPO's advancement of AI Phones.

The Google Gemini is available in three tiers: Ultra, Pro, and Nano. The Gemini Nano, which is the most efficient model for on-device tasks, is likely the tier that Oppo and OnePlus will use. The Google Pixel 8 Pro will be the first phone engineered to run Gemini Nano.

Second, both companies promise to roll out "a series of innovative features leveraging the advanced capabilities of Google's Gemini models throughout 2024". This could include features such as news article summaries, real-time audio content organisation, and creative social media content generation.

Over 100 new generative AI features are planned for the next three to five years for Oppo and OnePlus users.

Third, Oppo shared its insights on the four core capabilities that AI phones should have. They are efficient computing, perception of the real world, self-learning, and creativity.

Finally, Oppo shared that more than 10 million users around the world are already enjoying generative AI features on their devices such as the Oppo Find X7 series. One of these innovative features includes the AI Eraser tool which OnePlus shared earlier this month
