Olympus announces the latest in their “Tough” series of ruggedised cameras – the Stylus Tough TG-4

The new Stylus Tough TG-4 is waterproof to 15m, dustproof, shockproof to 2.1m, crushproof for up to 100kgf and freezeproof -10C, just like all the other “Tough” models before it, but it now brings new features for improved underwater performance like a multi-shot setting that does underwater HDR (or High Dynamic Range) images, ensuring that everything from details in the shadows to highlights from the reflections off boats can be captured clearly.

A new RAW format gives you further control in post using Olympus’ Viewer app, and the dedicated underwater shooting mode is now conveniently found on the TG-4’s mode dial itself, offering you optimized settings for underwater photography at a touch.

Macro photography is another strong suit of the Stylus Tough TG-4, as it features a 1 cm Super Macro mode at all zoom settings and a Digital Microscope that goes up to 44.4x zoom. This used to be between the 10 to 100mm focal length, but now it’s available for 10 to 300mm, allowing you to capture things like the veins of a leaf or the details of snowflakes.

Focus stacking mode allows you to combine multiple shots for greater depth-of-field at higher levels of magnification. The function works by taking eight different shots continuously while shifting focus from the foreground to the background, extracting the in-focus areas later to produce an image with a greater depth of field.

The Stylus Tough TG-4 has a high-performance 4x aspherical zoom lens that offers the equivalent range of a 25-100mm lens (35mm format) with an aperture of f/2.0 to f/4.7, and an optional lens accessories for underwater use are available too: the waterproof 18.5mm fish-eye lens offers a unique field of view, and the 1.7x 170mm telephoto lens gives you extra reach when needed. Both are attached to the front of the lens via a bayonet mount.

The underwater casing lets you take the TG-4 down to 45m.

If you need to go even deeper than 15m though, the Stylus Tough TG-4 will fit in the same underwater housing as the TG-3, the PT-056. This increases the waterproof depth of the camera down to 45m while giving you complete access to all your photo functions.

The Stylus Tough TG-4 will be available in a choice of red and black, but pricing and availability information has yet to be announced.
