NVIDIA announces the Jetson AGX Orin Developer Kit to push AI development

Note: This article was first published on 24th March 2022, and is now updated with local pricing and availability.

AI is the latest buzzword that tech manufacturers and start-ups like to throw around. But any true AI deployment like in autonomous driving vehicles, for example, isn’t’ simple with huge data sets needed to develop and train models, and sensors for detection and interpretation leading to an action or reaction.

So, at NVIDIA GTC 2022, to drive edge computing and moving analytics at the edge, NVIDIA is launching the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin developer kit. The company calls it the world’s most powerful, compact, and energy-efficient AI supercomputer for advanced robotics, autonomous machines, and next-generation embedded and edge computing. This will supersede the Jetson AGX Xavier.

Earlier Jetson Xavier devices were single-board computers that included a scaled-down server/data centre GPU that was deployed at the “edge” for machine and AI learning. The developer kit acted as a breakout board for the smaller Jetson module. Each NVIDIA Jetson module was a complete hardware package with CPU, GPU, high-speed interfaces, memory, power management, and more.

The latest Jetson is built around the earlier released Drive AGX Orin which is based on an NVIDIA Ampere architecture GPU with 2,048 CUDA cores, 64 Tensor cores, up to a 12-core Arm Cortex-A78AE CPU, up to 32GB of DDR5 RAM, to deliver 275 trillion operations per second (TOPS), giving customers over 8x the processing power of its predecessor, the Jetston AGX Xavier that delivered 30 TOPS.

Jetson AGX Orin is also backward compatible with the earlier Xavier model, so customers will have no problems moving to the new technology and won’t have lost any time spent in development over the past few years.

Some 6,000 companies have deployed Jetson AI solutions NVIDIA said. So, companies like Microsoft Azure, John Deere, Medtronic Digital Surgery, AWS, Hyundai Robotics, JD.com, Komatsu, and Meituan will have no problems moving to Jetson AGX Orin.

Pricing and Availability

The NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin developer kit is available now at US$1,999. In Singapore, you can get the Jetson AGX Orin developer kit for S$3,329 via Ban Leong Technologies.

Production modules will be available in the fourth quarter starting at USS$399.
