Number of Apple Pay users tripled and transaction volume up 500% in 2016

Besides the blockbuster holiday season of record-breaking revenues for the iPhone, Services, Mac and Apple Watch, Apple also shared that its mobile payment service has achieved impressive milestones.

During the company's earnings call yesterday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the number of Apple Pay users tripled in 2016 with transaction volume up 500% year over year.  In fact, billions in Apple Pay transactions occurred during the December quarter alone! In addition, Apple Pay on the web is now accepted by over two million small businesses.

Apple Pay was initially available in the U.S in late October 2014 before expanding to the U.K, Canada, and Australia in 2015. The expansion picked up momentum in 2016 with availability in China, Singapore, Switzerland, France, Hong Kong, Russia, New Zealand, Japan and Spain.
