When HMD Global announced its first batch of Android phones back in 2017, it promised of two major OS updates and two years of regular (monthly) security updates.

Well, now that the two years are up, the company is going to revise the schedule.

Nokia, in an announcement:

Once we reach 2 years from the time last market launched these smartphones (and following Operator and regional approvals), the Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3 will be able to receive quarterly security patch updates right through to the end of the 3rd year. To ensure you’ll be up to date, these quarterly releases will include all patches from the previous months.

To be more specific, the Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 are getting one more year of security patch updates, but delivered on a quarterly basis:

  • Nokia 3 - Quarterly updates from Sep 2019 to Sep 2020
  • Nokia 5 - Quarterly updates from Oct 2019 to Oct 2020
  • Nokia 6 - Quarterly updates from Oct 2019 to Oct 2020
  • Nokia 8 - Quarterly updates from Oct 2019 to Oct 2020

Because Android gets security patches every month, Nokia says each of its quarterly updates will include patches from the previous months.

For what it’s worth, the Nokia 6 has a different update schedule depending on where you got the phone from. If you’ve the Nokia 6 Amazon version from the U.S. and India, its security update support won’t be extended and will instead end this October 2019.

Finally, the Nokia 2, which was actually launched later than the other phones and only came to Singapore last year, will also see its security patch support end this November 2019. It’s been confirmed that this affordable phone won’t be getting Android 9 Pie.
