The fight for our right to repair our own devices took a big jump forward this week with the launch of Nokia’s new G22 smartphone.

Designed in partnership with iFixit – a community well-known for providing guides and manuals for repairing popular consumer gadgets – the G22 is built with sustainability and repairability in mind.

The phone’s rear panel is made from 100% recycled materials and comes with the tools and instructions to let users self-repair components with accessible and affordable replacement parts.

This includes damaged displays, bent charging ports or flat batteries – even after the phone’s warranty has expired. You can already find these parts listed on iFixit.

Regular software updates will also keep flowing to keep the phone ticking over the long-term: two years of Android upgrades, three years of monthly security updates, and extended three-year warranty at no extra cost.

What’s more, Nokia is promising an eye-popping 3-day battery life, and an 80% battery capacity even after three years. Only time will tell if these numbers hold up to promise.

Like its contemporary phones, Nokia is also taking the budget route for the G22. It’s not a flagship killer by any measure.

For example, its 6.52-inch display only has HD+ resolution (720 x 1200) and powering it is a quad-core 1.6GHz Unisoc T606 chip that isn't going to win any benchmarking test.

But the repairability and sustainability focus might win over consumers who prioritise value, longevity, and environmental responsibility, over having the most cutting-edge features and performance.

After all, no one likes having to buy a new phone just because of minor damage.

Availability and pricing

The Nokia G22 and its repair kits will go sale in the UK for £149.99 (~S$241). It will be made available later in Europe and select global markets like Australia.

We’ll share more information about local launch dates and pricing if and when they’re available, so check back soon.
