After years of waiting, we finally have some concrete details about the Nintendo Switch 2's release date, pricing and upgrades over the original Switch. Nintendo just held a Direct on the Switch 2, focusing on the features the new console offers, as well as the titles you can expect once it releases.

To get the juiciest details out of the way, the Nintendo Switch 2 will release globally on 5 June with an SRP of US$449.99 (~S$600). This is a US$150 markup from the price of the original Switch, and it's just the base price of the console; with bundles, which was mostly how the original Switch was sold in Southeast Asia at launch, the price will likely be higher than the assumed S$600+ figure.

The Direct also gave us some of the new features that the Switch 2 will have. These were teased in the short trailer released in January, but we now have hard numbers for the Switch 2's hardware. The screen has been upgraded to a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD display with 120Hz and HDR support. The faster display and HDR will only be supported in compatible games, as will the Joy-Con 2's new mouse controls.

The Switch 2's storage is also upgraded, with 256GB of internal storage; external storage will be supported with new microSD Express cards for Switch 2, with older cards meant for the original Switch being incompatible. Other upgrades include improved speakers, 3D spatial audio for headphones (support for the built-in speakers will be delivered via a future system update), two USB-C ports, a freely adjustable kickstand, an improved Joy-Con design that attaches to the console magnetically and a built-in microphone.

On that last point, the microphone isn't just for games, but also for the Switch 2's GameChat, a Discord-like video calling programme that allows you to chat with other Switch 2 users (even when you're all playing different games). GameChat will require an internet connection as well as a Nintendo Online membership, but the feature will be free to use for all Switch 2 users until 31 March 2026.

As for local availability, Nintendo Southeast Asia (SEA) has announced that the Switch 2 will be arriving in the region sometime between July-September 2025; this relates specifically to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Phillippines. Notably, Nintendo SEA also mentioned that they were working to establish the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch Online membership in the region as well. The two services have not been available in Southeast Asia despite the Switch releasing eight years ago, so this is quite the long overdue step in making Switch games more accessible to gamers in the region.
