Nintendo doubles Switch console production to 16 million units for 2017

Nintendo will be doubling the production for its Switch console to 16 million within their fiscal year (April 2017 to March 2018), as reported by Wall Street Journal.

According to Ars Technica, Nintendo initially planned to produce 8 million Nintendo Switch units, but “people briefed on [Nintendo's] plans” were informed that production will be doubled. Just last week, a SuperData Research report deduced that 1.5 million Nintendo Switch consoles were sold in its first week, globally. The same research arm also estimates that Nintendo will sell 5 million units within 2017 itself.

How many is 16 million in the world of game consoles? For reference, the Nintendo Wii U console was released in 2012, and it sold 13.56 million units to date. Microsoft’s Xbox One console sold approximately 10 million since its inception in 2013, while Sony’s PS4 consoles saw approximately 53.4 million units sold as of January 2017.

Nintendo's 2016/2017 earnings report will be due on 27th April 2017, and E3 2017 follows up in June. Until then, Nintendo has been moving quietly, despite their optimistic outlook.
