It’s time to dive into some ink-filled chaos… again!

Today’s Nintendo Direct brought us a new game announcement: Splatoon 3. An enigmatic trailer showed off the game’s new character creation system despite warning that this was ‘not actual gameplay footage’, and then teased its setting and chaotic multiplayer gameplay.

Watch the quirky trailer below:

The teaser hints at potential singleplayer content, beginning with the main character journeying through a Mad Max-like wasteland with an upside-down Eiffel Tower, called the Splatlands. They then board a train with their companion - a feisty little thing with a customisable haircut - and then arrive in Splatsville, the ‘city of chaos’. Though a story mode wasn’t confirmed, Splatoon 2 did get some well-received singleplayer content, so it isn’t totally out of the question.

Splatoon 2 arrived on the Nintendo Switch back in 2017, garnering a passionate fanbase thanks to the quirky, colourful nature of its shooter gameplay. It looks like the franchise has proven to be successful enough for Nintendo to greenlight another sequel, though one has to wonder how it plans to innovate over its predecessors. Splatoon 3 will launch on the Nintendo Switch in 2022.
