The new Surface Book 2 is powerful, has a big screen, and lasts very long

Along with the arrival of the Fall Creators Update, Microsoft has today also announced the Surface Book 2 laptop.

Calling it the most powerful Surface laptop ever, the successor to the original Surface Book now runs Intel’s latest 8th-gen 'Coffee Lake' Core mobile processors, with options for NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1050 and 1060 discrete graphics. Battery life is rated at up to 17 hours of video playback, a spec that Microsoft is keen to remind us is 70% more than the latest MacBook Pro.

Surface Book 2 comes in two screen sizes: 13-inch and 15-inch. The former has a 3,000 x 2,000 resolution, the latter 3,240 x 2,160. Both can be configured with up to 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD storage, and an i7-8650U CPU, though the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics is only for the 15-inch model. At the other end, the 13-inch model has a base model that uses a 7th-gen Intel Core i5-7300U CPU and which doesn’t support discrete graphics. All the 13-inch variants’ tablet/screen portion is fanless.

Additionally, both 13 and 15-inch systems pack two regular USB-A ports, one USB-C port (USB 3.1 Gen 1, no Thunderbolt support), a Surface Connect port, an SD card slot, and yes, a headphone jack with support for Dolby Atmos for headphones. An 8MP camera and a 5MP camera can be found at the rear and front respectively, and both can shoot 1080p30 video. Of course, that Dynamic Fulcrum Hinge that defines the first Surface Book remains, but Microsoft has redesigned it to provide a smoother, faster detach into Tablet or Studio mode. Finally, like the new Surface Pro, the Surface Pen is a separate purchase.

Pricing starts at US$1,499 for the 13-inch Surface Book 2, and US$2,499 for the 15-incher. Pre-orders begin November 9 in the U.S. (and additional markets around the world for the 13-inch model), with shipping scheduled for November 16. Considering that the original Surface Book didn’t make its way here to Singapore, I don’t have high hopes that it’d be any different this time.
