The new Bose Frames are part sunglasses, part speaker

Better known for their headphones and speakers, it appears Bose has is preparing to launch a line of sunglasses too. Dubbed the “Bose Frames”, the sunglasses are supposed to let you tap into Bose AR, an audio-only augmented reality platform that offers contextual audio cues for “first-of-a-kind” experiences.

The design of the Bose Frames Alto is based on the classic angular shape. They’re of course Bluetooth enabled, and feature an integrated microphone so you can use them to take calls from your phone. Embedded in the temples are miniaturized Bose speakers that are angled to direct sound just to you and away from everyone else. A button under the right temple allows you to take/make calls, play/pause music, and access Siri or Google Assistant.

The sunglasses will have a Bluetooth range of 9m, charging time of two hours, and offer up to 3.5 hours of streaming music playback. Over-the-air updates for the Bose Frames will come via the Bose Connect app to unlock the AR features once they become available.

No word on global availability, but the Bose Frames are available for pre-order now from the Bose US webstore for US$199.95. Shipping is said to start from early January.
