NETS gives out 1 million complimentary NETS motoring card to ease OBU 2.0 transition

Those who’ve already installed the “next-generation” ERP in-vehicle onboard units (OBUs) can still get the free card by mail.

Getting that UHNWI experience of receiving a new spending card in the mail? Aww, NETS, you didn't have to.

Most drivers in Singapore would’ve already heard about the new electronic road pricing (ERP 2.0) and its accompanying on-board unit 2.0 (OBU 2.0), which has gained plenty of attention over the last few months.

For the passenger princes and princesses among us, you can check out the series of articles here if you want to appreciate why drivers are so passionate about the changes this project brings.

In a nutshell, the new three-piece system, which meets global benchmarks for electronic devices, has an interesting in-vehicle placement that saw an “absence of complaints”. That said, early adopters of OBU 2.0 are granted the privilege of repositioning the unit to the driver's side, so that the driver’s foot or knees can be intimately reminded of the law-abiding, tax-paying device every time they take the wheel.

One million complimentary NETS Motoring card

In an official release today (30 May 2024), Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS) has decidedly thrown its hat into the ring. The payments provider announced that it’s giving away complimentary NETS Motoring cards to every vehicle owner when they install their new OBUs (card pictured above).

Up to one million motorists are expected to receive the complimentary card. This includes motorists who have already installed the new system in their vehicles. Here’s how:

  • Those who installed the new OBU before 1 May 2024 will receive the free card by post, starting from mid-June 2024
  • Those who installed between 1 May and 30 June 2024 will receive it via post too, but within five weeks of OBU installation
  • Those who install on and after 1 July 2024 will receive the card at the point of OBU installation

The NETS Motoring card is a stored-value card compatible with the new OBUs and capable of paying tolls via ERP. NETS added that it’s the only card accepted at all carparks in Singapore, so motorists do not have to remove their existing cards inside their OBUs to pay for parking at retro carparks that do not use ERP systems.

To use the new card, motorists can add cash value (top-up) via the NETS app. They can also top-up the new card at the 3,800 NETS top-up machines in Singapore. Top-ups can also be done via NETS Customer Service Centre, the ATMs of local banks, and convenience stores. These options exist alongside an auto-top-up feature (opt-in) on the new card as well.
