Netflix app for iOS no longer supports AirPlay

Netflix has stopped support for AirPlay on iOS devices.

A feature which had been available since 2013, it stopped working earlier last week according to some iOS users. Netflix's initial statement on the matter attributed the issue to "technical limitations". A Netflix spokesperson later provided a clearer explanation:

"We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn't a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn't) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices."

At CES 2019, LG and Samsung announced that their smart TVs will support AirPlay 2. It does makes sense for Netflix to better protect its content and user experience. Last month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings revealed that Netflix will not be part of Apple TV+ video streaming service. The company also stopped allowing customers to sign up for Netflix within the iOS app.
