Native apps for Apple Watch available later this year, Apple to release new SDK

There are currently over 3,500 apps available for the Apple Watch in the App Store.

Apple currently has over 3,500 apps developed for the Apple Watch, but most of them require a paired iPhone to run. This will change in the coming months as Apple's operations chief Jeff Williams confirmed that native apps will be available in fall.

To help with the development of native apps for the Apple Watch, Apple will be releasing a new software development kit (SDK) at WWDC 2015 which will take place from 8 June to 12.

Developers can then code apps to run natively on the Apple Watch without having to be connected to the iPhone. Another benefit of having native apps is the improved user experience as third-party apps are said to be sluggish on the Apple Watch. Consumers also can look forward to apps that utilize the different sensors on the Apple Watch such as the heart rate monitor.

With more countries expected to start selling the Apple Watch in late June, it's a race against time for Apple and developers to improve the app experience on the smart watch. Williams described the sales of the Apple Watch to be "fantastic" while declining to provide a specific figure.
