myFirst launches updated smart ‘watchphone’ for kids - the Fone R1s

How do you familiarise your children with rapidly-evolving technology, and yet ensure that it’s practical yet cute enough for use? Why, with a smart ‘watchphone’, of course.

Singapore-based ‘kids tech’ startup brand myFirst (owned by Oaxis Asia) launched an updated version of their watchphone gadget for kids. The myFirst Fone R1s is a child-friendly version of your classic smartwatch, with a one-year contract plan for its SIM card that enables the kid in question to chat, video, and voice call their loved ones over 4G connectivity.

As a massively improved version of the Fone R1, the Fone R1s not only comes with the same 1.3-inch IPS display and 2MP camera for video calls. It now also comes with an expanded 8GB storage for keeping nearly three times more tracks, an improved water resistance rating (IPX8, up from IPX7), and double the RAM for processing (1GB, up from 512MB).

New features include a brand-new heart rate monitor, steps goal tracking with animations, lift-to-wake, vibration notifications, and a Find My Watch feature for your child’s misplaced Fone R1s.

If you’re new to myFirst’s ‘smartwatch’, know that the device can be paired directly with its app on the parent’s or guardian’s phone. Such design allows the caregiver to get necessary access and control over the Fone R1s. For example, a guardian can permit certain contacts from calling the watchphone, receiving real-time updates on the kid’s whereabouts, and even ‘ringfencing’ the child’s movements with its built-in GPS and geo-fencing area alert features. All in all, it’s a fancy little gadget built with child safety in mind.

The myFirst Fone R1s retails at S$269. Pre-orders starts on 15 December 2021. The one-year SIM card granting mobile data access costs S$28/month, but each purchase of the R1s also gives six months of free data. You can find its online store and authorised retailers here. Each purchase comes with one of its five coloured straps (Green, Magenta, Navy Blue, Purple, Yellow), and there’s a choice between two watch cases - Cotton Candy or Space Blue.
