More than a quarter of iPhone users switched to Android between Q1 and Q2 2020

While the iPhone 12 delivered an upgrade super-cycle for Apple in Q4 2020, the company saw "meaningful switching" in 2019 and 2020.

These statistics were revealed in internal documents during the Epic Games vs Apple trial; Apple's own market research indicates that 19%, 14%, 26%, 26% and 12% of iPhone users switched to another smartphone (presumably Android) from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020.

The highest percentage of iPhone users switching to Android occurred between Q1 2020 and Q2 2020. As this period coincided with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is believed that economic uncertainty led these iPhone users to seek out more affordable alternatives. It also goes without saying that the percentage of switchers declined in Q3 2020 due to the launch of the iPhone 12.

Nonetheless, the data suggests that iPhone users' loyalty to the brand isn't as strong as we thought it is.
