Montblanc's third-generation smartwatch is coming and it will be called the Summit 3.

The Summit has always supported Google's smartwatch OS. The first Summit watch supported Android Wear and then the Summit 2 supported Wear OS. So no one was surprised to hear that the Summit 3 will support Google's newest Wear OS 3.

What's surprising, however, is that the Summit 3 will be the first Wear OS 3 watch to work with iPhones. This has been confirmed by both Qualcomm and Google.

Qualcomm spokesperson Lauren Miller said that the Summit 3 will have a dedicated companion app on iOS that will allow the Summit 3 to communicate, sync, and work with the iPhone.

This suggests that it's also possible for other smartwatch makers, like Fossil, to develop their own apps if they want to ensure iPhone compatibility.

That said, iPhone users shouldn't expect the same Wear OS 3 experience as Android users.

Google spokesperson Ivy Chen said:

Our priority for Wear OS 3 is to focus on quality experiences within the Android ecosystem. The Montblanc Summit 3 will run Wear OS 3 and be compatible with iPhones. However, support for apps and experiences will vary by phone platform.

It's unclear at this point how the experience will differ but Montblanc plans to launch the Summit 3 on 15 July, so we'll find out soon. The Summit 3 is expected to be priced at €1,250 (~S$1,827).
