Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok

Microsoft is said to be interested in buying video-sharing mobile app TikTok.

One source told CNBC that Microsoft has been talking to ByteDance - the owner of TikTok - for some time. Earlier this week, TikTok is valued at $50 billion by ByteDance investors who are planning to take over TikTok.

The popularity of TikTok in the U.S has led to the Trump administration scrutinising the app. The U.S government is concerned that TikTok could be used by China to gather data on U.S users. Other options are also on the table according to U.S President Donald Trump.

“We’re looking at TikTok, we may be banning TikTok, we may be doing some other things, there’s a couple of options but a lot of things are happening, we’ll see what happens,” President Donald Trump said on the White House’s South Lawn on Friday. “We are looking at a lot of alternatives with respect to TikTok.”

Microsoft and TikTok declined to comment on the report. TikTok says it does not comment on rumours or speculation, and is confident in the long-term success of the app.
