Microsoft releases Windows 10 October 2018 Update

Update, Oct 6: Microsoft has pulled the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) as it investigates reports of user files being deleted upon installation.

--

Microsoft has announced that it’s rolling out the Windows 10 October 2018 Update via the operating system's Windows Update function starting today.

The second major Windows 10 update of the year, this October 2018 update comes with a slew of new features. One of the more interesting ones is the Cloud Clipboard, which allows you to access your clipboard as you roam from device to device.

The Cloud Clipboard’s roaming history capability uses the same tech that powers Timeline (a feature that syncs your app history across devices and lets you pick up where you left off on your PC), which itself is getting a few new enhancements. For one, your PC’s timeline is coming to your phone, which means you can finally scroll back in time to find the files and websites regardless of the device you’re using. This Timeline for phone function is available in preview starting today on Android phone via the Microsoft Launcher app, and coming soon as a preview for iPhone. Microsoft is also building Firefox and Chrome extensions to work with Timeline for tab syncing. Microsoft’s own Edge browser is getting Timeline support in November.

There’s also a new Your Phone app that lets Android phone users get instant access to their phones’ photos and texts on their computers through an app mirroring function. For now, we’re only talking about mirroring from Android’s stock photo and messaging apps, but down the road, Microsoft is expected to add mirroring support for more Android apps.
