Microsoft to release next major Windows 10 update in April next year?

It’s probably no secret that Microsoft intends to release the next major Windows 10 update (a.k.a. ‘Redstone 2’) sometime in spring 2017. But when in spring? Is it as early as March (spring starts March 20, by the way) or as late as June when spring ends?

Well, while the exact date isn’t cast in stone yet, it looks like the Redmond-headquartered company is working towards finalizing the update by March 2017. This news came by way of Twitter user WalkingCat and Tero Alhonen, the latter of whom also confirming that version number ‘1703’ is appearing in a group policy in pre-released versions of Windows 10 Redstone 2.

For the uninitiated, the initial release of Windows 10 is version 1507 and it went both RTM and general release in July 2015. The current release (i.e., the Anniversary Update), which is version 1607, was finalized in July 2016. So it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Redstone 2’s 1703 means March 2017.

That said, this doesn’t mean Microsoft will definitely release the update in March next year. But if I were a betting man, based of past release dates, I expect Redstone 2 to be finalized in end March, with a rollout starting in April for PCs and (few weeks later) Windows 10 phones. This timeline also fits well with Microsoft’s Build developer conference, which is expected to take place sometime in March/April 2017 too.
