Microsoft has quietly released an update for the base model of the Surface Book 2. The 13.5-inch model is now available with Intel's new 8th-generation quad-core Core i5-8350U (1.70GHz, 6MB L3 cache) processor, which can boost to a maximum turbo frequency of 3.60GHz.

The new configuration will cost US$1,499, but Microsoft is still keeping the old dual-core 7th-generation version at a lower price of US$1,299. Previously, Microsoft already offered the Core i7-8650U (1.90GHz, 8MB L3 cache) at a starting price of US$1,999.

The new Core i5 model comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but the processor is pretty much the only change of note. That said, the quad-core Core i5 chip should provide quite a decent performance upgrade from the dual-core chip without having to shell out for the pricier Core i7 model.

Unfortunately, the new model is not yet available in Singapore, and Microsoft hasn't said anything about if or when it will be arriving.

Moving forward, Microsoft has a Surface event planned for 17 April in New York, where it is expected to reveal the pricing and availability of its Surface Hub 2 and accessories and office furniture from Steelcase.
