In a patent application, Microsoft states that a touch sensor will be incorporated into the device’s fabric material build. This sensor can be connected to work with other devices. This smart fabric is imbued with capacitance sensing and can be configured to work like an input device.

One major advantage of this smart fabric is to allow a user to maintain his grip on the device while controlling it. The smart fabric can also be paired to control other devices. The HoloLens was also mentioned in the patent, where the presence of smart fabric will enable touch inputs and gestures of the wearer.

There’s also an interesting implementation where the touch sensor is incorporated into the fabric of a sofa. This may be ideal for a smart home where the user can control his devices from the comfort of the sofa.
