Microsoft is offering a free version of Teams starting today

Microsoft has announced that it’s offering a free version of Teams starting today. Targeted at small businesses that don’t have commercial Office 365 subscriptions, this move should make Teams more competitive against everyone’s favorite team collaboration service, Slack, which already has a free tier.

The free version of Microsoft Teams is available worldwide in 40 languages, and includes the following features for up to 300 people:

  • Unlimited chat messages and search
  • Built-in audio and video calling for individuals, groups, and full team meetups
  • 10GB of team file storage + additional 2GB per person for personal storage
  • Integrated, real-time content creation with Office Online apps, including built-in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote
  • Unlimited app integrations with 140+ business apps to choose from - including Adobe, Evernote, and Trello
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with anyone inside or outside your organization

Versus the free version of Slack, the free version of Teams has a few advantages. For one, Teams offers unlimited chat messages and search, whereas Slack only lets you search up to 10,000 of your team’s most recent messages. Teams’ unlimited app integrations also compares favorably against Slack’s 10. The free version of Slack also only provides 5GB of storage.
