Microsoft announces Visual Studio Code cross-platform code editor

Microsoft has just announced Visual Studio Code, a code-optimized editor that runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux. Available for free across all these platforms, the first download for it will be made available today here.

Out of the box, Visual Studio Code supports multiple languages with enhanced support for Node.js and ASP.NET 5; as well as Git and Visual Studio's features like IntelliSense intelligent code completion, peek, and debugging. (Here's a more detailed blog post from Microsoft for those interested to know more.)

With Microsoft Azure as the backend, and tools like Visual Studio Code, the Windows-only Visual Studio 2015 (which Microsoft says is the most complete developer IDE), and Visual Studio Online, Microsoft aims to offer best-in-class tools for every developer, whether they’re developing native or web apps or SaaS (software as a service) offerings. More importantly, it reaffirms the company's commitment to support developers on non-Windows platforms.
