Xiaomi just announced its first foldable phone, the Mi Mix Fold.

The Mi Mix Fold sports a flexible 8.01-inch WQHD+ OLED display with 4:3 aspect ratio and 60Hz refresh rate, making it slightly bigger than the Huawei Mate X2 and the largest in the industry. The screen is also fine-tuned by Xiaomi's own colour calibration algorithm to achieve an impressive colour accuracy of JNCD≈0.29 and ΔE≈0.35.

Coupled with HDR10+ support and DCI-P3 colour gamut, the 8.01-inch OLED display is set to offer highly dynamic and life-like images. The huge display can support split screen, multi-screen drag and drop, parallel windows, Desktop mode and multi windows where users can watch up to four videos in different windows at the same time.

On the outside is a 6.52-inch AMOLED display, which happens to be the biggest one on any foldable phone in the market. It boasts a slightly higher refresh rate at 90Hz and HDR10+ support.

Xiaomi adopts a U-shaped hinge design for the Mi Mix Fold, which it claims to improve reliability and reduce the weight of the device. The hinge went through 200,000 bends in reliability testing and up to 1 million bends in extreme reliability testing.

The Mi Mix Fold is the world's first phone with quad speakers and they are professionally grade-tuned through SOUND BY Harman Kardon. It is also the first phone to adopt true panoramic surround sound using its quad-speaker array algorithm.

Xiaomi also introduced the Surge C1 processor - an image processing chip developed by the company - on the Mi Mix Fold. The Surge C1 processor offers an improved 3A algorithm (auto focus, auto exposure, auto white balance) and low-light focus capabilities for better image quality.

In another world's first, the Mi Mix Fold is equipped with Liquid Lens technology for the telephoto lens, which allows for 3x optical zoom, up to 30x telephoto, and a minimum focus distance of 3cm. Other benefits of the Liquid Lens technology include high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion, and excellent resistance to extreme environmental conditions. The Liquid Lens can maintain the fluid form from -40°C to 60°C!

The primary camera is a 108MP HM2 sensor with a 7P lens and the other camera is a 13MP ultra-wide angle lens with 123° field of view and AI ultra-wide angle distortion correction. The front camera is a 20MP shooter.

Powering the Mi Mix Fold are Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, MIUI 12 based on Android 10, and a 5,020mAh battery, which is also the largest battery capacity among foldable phones in the market. The custom-made three IC chipsets and parallel combination of two super-efficient charge pumps allows the Mi Mix Fold to be fully charged in 37 minutes via 67W wired fast charging.

The Mi Mix Fold has a butterfly-cooling system which consists of a large-area VC liquid cooling, thermal gel, and multilayer graphite sheets for more efficient heat dissipation.

Xiaomi offers the Mi Mix Fold in a Standard and Ceramic Special Edition. While the Standard model uses Gorilla Glass 5 for the back cover, the Ceramic Special Edition has a gold middle frame and volume buttons along with a black ceramic back and special laser engraving. Below are the retail prices for the different configurations:

  • 9,999 yuan - 12GB + 256GB
  • 10,999 yuan - 12GB + 512GB
  • 12,999 yuan - 16GB + 512GB

Pre-orders for both models are now available in China with official sales starting from 16 April.
