Facebook’s and Instagram’s parent company Meta has announced plans to roll out Meta Verified, a new subscription bundle that includes account verification with impersonation protections and access to increased visibility and support.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s chief executive, announced in a Facebook post on Sunday that the bundle would start at US$11.99 per month online or US$14.99 per month on iOS and Android when it rolls out in Australia and New Zealand later this week, with it launching in more countries soon.

According to Meta, the bundle would include a verified badge that authenticates your account with government ID and as long as you meet the eligibility criteria such as prior posting history and be at least 18 years old.

Increased visibility may vary depending on a subscriber’s existing audience size and the topic of their posts, the company said, subscribers with a smaller following may see a more noticeable bump in their audience due to an inherently smaller audience.

Meta also spoke about offering “exclusive stickers” on Facebook, Instagram Stories, and Facebook Reels, and 100 free stars a month on Facebook so subscribers could show support for other creators. It added businesses are not eligible to apply for Meta Verified at this time, but did not state when this would be lifted.

This follows Twitter’s official announcement that it plans to charge for two-factor authentication (2FA) to users who are subscribed to the US$8 per month Twitter Blue service from 20 March. Twitter said it would disable the 2FA on non-subscriber accounts that use SMS authentication if they do not switch to a paid account before the deadline.
