Western Digital has unveiled My Passport SSD, its first portable SSD that offers up to 1TB in storage. The portable SSD also comes in 256GB and 512GB capacities. The My Passport SSD is currently only available in the United States, and their suggested retail prices are US$399.99 for the 1TB version, US$199.99 for 512GB of storage, and US$99.99 for the lowest storage option of 256GB.

The My Passport SSD measures 90- x 45- x 10mm, and this means the portable SSD is slightly thinner than its closest competitor, the Samsung Portable SSD T3. The WD portable SSD sports a USB 3.1 Gen 2, Type-C interface port, and supports data transfer rates up to 10Gbps. Western Digital also claims My Passport SSD has a peak 515MB/s sequential read speed, which is about on par with your regular SATA-based SSDs. However, this lofty claim by Western Digital remains to be tested.

All drives comes with a three-year warranty, and each drive is also “6.5-foot (1.98 meters) drop tested for shock-resistance to withstand 1500G of force.” The drive also ships with a Type-C to A adapter so that it can operate with devices that have only USB Type-A ports. There isn’t word yet on when these drives will reach our shores; in the meantime, you can visit WD’s page for more product details.
