MediaTek's new Helio P90 processor brings high-end AI capabilities to mid-range devices

At a launch event in Beijing today, MediaTek announced its latest mobile chipset, the Helio P90. The new processor is built on a 12nm manufacturing process and is designed to offer flagship performance in mid-range devices.

The 12nm MediaTek Helio P90 is an octa-core processor, with a pair of ARM Cortex A75 CPUs that work at 2.2GHz and six ARM Cortex A55 CPUs that function at 2.0GHz. The P90 has a PowerVR GM 9946 GPU for graphics.

The biggest new addition to the P90 is a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Accelerator (AIA), which joins two Application Processing Units (APU) for enhanced AI capabilities. The APUs usually deal with the main A.I. tasks on the phone, however for commonly used A.I. features, the AIA takes over for better efficiency and greater power. Compared to the Helio P70 and Helio P60 chipsets, the Helio P90 can apparently deliver four times better AI performance.

Helio P90 powered devices will be able to support up to 8 GB RAM and UFS 2.1 storage. Phones featuring it will be able to support 48-megapixel camera or 24-megapixel + 16-megapixel dual camera setups.  It supports a maximum display resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels (full HD+) with an aspect ratio up to 21:9.

Connectivity features supported by the Helio P90 include Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo and FM Radio. It also carries support for 4G Cat. 12 / 13 LTE modem, dual 4G VoLTE, ViLTE, 4×4 MIMO and 3CA.

According to MediaTek, devices powered by the Helio P90 will likely reach consumers in Q1 2019.
