MediaTek's new Helio P22 SoC promises to bring high-end features to mid-tier devices

MediaTek has unveiled a new mid-range Helio P SoC that promises to bring high-end features to mid-tier devices.

The Helio P22 is the first mid-range chip on a 12nm manufacturing process, and has support for both AI applications and dual-camera support. The octa-core chipset runs on eight Arm Cortex A53 processors operating at up to 2.0GHz.

Screens with resolutions up to 1,600x720 are supported, with a maximum aspect ratio of 20:9. Dual-SIM functionality is built-in, with LTE connectivity on both. There's also 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and GLONASS. The P22 also supports dual rear cameras of resolutions up to 13 MP + 8 MP, with 30fps video recording. It has a low-power, "highly capable hardware depth engine for real-time Bokeh preview".

TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek's Wireless Communication business unit said, "With support for high quality dual camera photography, AI enhancements and incredible power efficiency, the Helio P22 sets a new bar for accessibility to premium features. We expect continued device maker wins and consumer growth in this segment with MediaTek's new Helio P22 chipset."

The Helio P22 is in volume production now, and is expected to be available in consumer devices by the end of Q2 2018.
