MediaTek unveils the first mobile chip with an integrated 5G chip

MediaTek is entering the 5G smartphone modem market with its latest chip, which is the first in the world to have an integrated 5G modem.

The integrated 5G chipset is built on a 7nm process and consists of the Helio M70 5G modem, ARM's recently announced Cortex-A77, Mali-G77 and MediaTek's AI processing unit (APU). Coupled with intelligent power savings and comprehensive power management, MediaTek's integrated 5G chipset saves on physical space within the device and improves the battery life.

The M70 5G modem is capable of delivering a theoretical maximum download speed of 4.7Gbps and upload speed of 2.5Gbps. It’s not as fast as Qualcomm’s second generation X55 modem which delivers download speeds of up to 7Gbps.

It is also a multi-mode 5G chipset; it supports 5G stand alone and non-stand alone (SA/NSA) sub-6GHz networks, and connectivity from 2G to 4G to bridge existing network access while 5G networks are being rolled out globally.

MediaTek says the integrated 5G chipset will be ready for lead customer samples in Q3 2019 and the first commercial devices should launch by Q1 2020.
