MediaTek overtakes Qualcomm to be biggest phone chipset vendor in Q3 2020
MediaTek has dethroned Qualcomm to be the biggest phone chipset vendor in Q3 2020 according to data from Counterpoint Research.
More than 100 million phones with MediaTek chipsets were sold globally in the previous quarter, which helped MediaTek clinch 31% market share. Its impressive growth is attributed to three reasons:
- strong performance in the mid-end smartphone price segment ($100-$250) and emerging markets
- the U.S trade restrictions on Huawei
- securing chipset orders from leading phone brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi and Honor
Qualcomm remains the biggest 5G chipset vendor as its Snapdragon mobile platforms powered 39% of 5G phones sold globally. It also gained from the U.S trade ban on Huawei, which affected HiSilicon's supply chain.
Looking ahead, Counterpoint states that the race is on between Qualcomm and MediaTek to bring 5G to the masses and unlock the potential consumer use cases such as cloud gaming.
