MediaTek hops onto the generative AI bandwagon with the unveiling of its latest chipset, the Dimensity 8300

The company says the Dimensity 8300 is the first premium-tier SoC to have full generative AI support, thanks to the APU 780 AI processor that is integrated into the chipset.

Developers can design innovative apps that leverage large language models with the Dimensity 8300. In addition, the APU 780 delivers 2x improvement in INT and FP16 computation and boasts a 3.3x boost in AI performance over the Dimensity 8200.

The Dimensity 8300 is built on TSMC's 2nd-generation 4nm process and has an octa-core CPU comprising four ARM Cortex-A715 cores and four Cortex-A510 cores based on ARM's latest v9 CPU architecture.

MediaTek says the chip delivers 20% faster GPU performance and 30% peak gains in power efficiency compared to the previous generation chipset.

For mobile gamers, the Dimensity 8300 is said to offer 24% faster game scene change and 24% lower power consumption at full frame rate due to MediaTek's Adaptive Game Technology 2.0 which has "exclusive performance algorithms" to monitor the device's temperature and adapts to the user's demands.

Other specs include support for 4K60 HDR video recording, 3CC carrier aggregation with up to 5.17GBp downlink speeds, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.

MediaTek says 5G devices powered by the Dimensity 8300 will launch in the global market before the end of the year.
