macOS Catalina is the next OS for Macs and it is finally available as a free download for all Mac computers.

It was unveiled at WWDC 2019 earlier this year and it brings about a ton of new features and updates.

In case you were wondering, the name comes from the Santa Catalina island just off the coast of California.

Some of the big updates in macOS Catalina includes the removal of iTunes. As rumoured, iTunes will finally be put to bed and its functions will be succeeded by three separate apps: Music, Podcasts, and TV.

The other big update in macOS Catalina is Sidecar, which enables users to use their iPad as a secondary display. You can use it simply as an extended display or, with the Apple Pencil, use it as a high precision drawing tablet. Best of all, it works wirelessly so you don't need to carry around a cumbersome cable.

Finally, macOS Catalina will end support for 32-bit apps. So make sure your most-used apps have been updated to 64-bit or have a 64-bit equivalent before updating. Here's how you can check if your favourite apps are running in 64-bit.

To update to macOS Catalina, simply click on the Apple icon () on the top right of your system. Then click About This Mac, and click Software Update. It's highly recommended that you backup your system before updating.
