M1 launches Singapore's first nationwide 300mbps 4G network

M1 announced today the launch of Singapore's first nationwide next-generation 4G network, with download speeds of up to 300Mbps. All existing M1 customers currently signed up to one of M1's LTE 4G plans will be able to enjoy the faster download speeds at no additional charge.

It's worth noting that, while the service is capped at a technical upper limitation of 300Mbps (thus the name), users should not realistically expect download speeds of 300Mbps. According to M1, the typical download speed for its 300Mbps 4G service will be between 43-115Mbps. Last year, when we tested M1's 75mbps 4G LTE network, download speeds averaged about 10.4Mbps to 40.7Mbps, depending on your location (this was before M1 doubled its download speed to 150Mbps earlier this year).

Mr Patrick Scodeller, Chief Operating Officer, M1, said,

“We continually invest in our networks to ensure our customers consistently enjoy a better experience with us. In 2012, we launched South East Asia’s first nationwide 4G network with download speeds of up to 75Mbps, and further enhanced our network to 150Mbps download speeds nationwide earlier this year. Today, we have yet again doubled the download speeds to 300Mbps nationwide, which our customers, who enjoy Singapore’s best-value smartphone plans, can experience at no additional charge."

StarHub's response updated at 8pm:-

Following M1's nationwide LTA-Advanced network roll-out announcement, StarHub has supplied a comment that its network infrastructure is also being continuously being upgraded and it aims to bring an equivalent speed boost to 300Mbps nationwide sometime next year when more 4G LTE-A compatible phones become mainstream.

Currently, the the big green telco says that by end of December, 4G customers with compatible devices will be able to enjoy peak speeds of up to 300Mbps on StarHub's 4G LTE-A network in the CBD area and retail hubs in Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Bishan, Jurong East, Orchard, Serangoon, Tampines, Woodlands and others.
