M1 and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to pool their research efforts into the development of remote operations of tactile robots using 5G technology. This is in line with Singapore’s Smart Nation initiatives. The MOU will set the stage of the “development of 5G technologies for advanced robotics systems.”

M1 will deploy its 5G network as small cells in an indoor network testbed that's located on SUTD premises. The varsity will focus on “tactile security, delivery and mascot robots, real-time remote sensing, real-time remote operation of robots and e-scooters, as well as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) content delivery with 360 degrees video streaming” for their research efforts that make use of the testbed.

Last month, M1 and Singtel were the only two local telcos involved in the 5G Trial Tech Call from IMDA and PSA Corporation to test 5G technologies for next-generation port operation applications. 5G trial applications in Singapore have been boosted by a S$40 million fund from the government.
