Likely specs of Microsoft Surface Duo revealed

The Microsoft Surface Duo.

Microsoft did not reveal much details about the Surface Duo during the launch event last year, but Windows Central claims to have the confirmed list of specs for the device.

Sources told Windows Central that the Surface Duo will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, 6GB RAM, Android 10 (upgradeable to Android 11), and a 3,460mAh battery. The display panels are said to be AMOLED with a pixel density of 401 ppi.

The Surface Duo will come with 64GB or 256GB internal storage options. Other rumoured specs include a single 11MP f/2.0 camera, a fingerprint sensor, 1 USB-C port, a nano-SIM card slot and support for the Surface Pen.

As for software, all of Microsoft's first-party apps will be preloaded on the Surface Duo and will support spanning across both displays. Drag and drop capabilities are also supported between two different apps. However, not all third-party Android apps will support drag and drop.

Windows Central speculates that Microsoft did not use the latest Snapdragon 865 mobile platform because Qualcomm requires smartphone makers to include a separate 5G chip and the Surface Duo's internal design has been finalised before the requirement was made known. If Microsoft plans to use Snapdragon 865, it would require a significant redesign of the hardware to accommodate the additional 5G chip.

While the Surface Neo is rumoured to be delayed till 2021, Windows Central expects the Surface Duo to be "almost ready" for launch. The Surface Duo could also arrive earlier than the year-end holiday season.
