LG unveils the LG G4 as well as Singapore pricing and availability

LG has unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the LG G4, today. The G4 boasts a 5.5-inch QHD 2560 x 1440 pixel display with its volume and power buttons on the back. It's slightly bigger than last year's G3, and a bit heavier too, but overall it feels fairly similar. Like the G3, the back of the G4 is slightly curved and, in fact, the G4's display also displays a slight curvature, although its not as drastic as the curve on the G Flex 2. LG calls the design "Slim Arc" and says it offers 20 percent better durability than a flat smartphone in face-down drops and gives the smartphone a more comfortable and secure feel in the hand.

LG has paid special attention to the materials utilized in the G4. The back cover will be available in genuine full grain leather finish in three colors (Black, Brown and Red). According to LG, the leather uses a vegetable tanning process that is an age-old tradition that requires skilled craftsmen to produce and dye the leather. LG also pointed out that the vegetable tanned leather is environmental friendly and can be recycled easily, since no harsh chemicals are used. If you prefer a more standard finish, the G4 is also available in Metallic Gray or Shiny Gold.

While the G4's display has the same size and resolution as last year's phone, LG has introduced a number of new technologies that supposedly make it the best display out there right now. LG is calling its display "Quantum IPS" (because its a "quantum leap forward in technology") and states that the new panel has the same color accuracy rating as displays used for color grading movies. It's also 25 percent brighter with 50 percent better contrast and 20 percent better color accuracy. LG also says it's 11 percent more power efficient than the G3's screen.

The G4's camera has also been upgraded, with a new 16-megapixel sensor, brighter f/1.8 lens, and improved image stabilization. It has the same laser autofocus system as before, but it also adds a new "color spectrum sensor" that promises more accurate color and white balance in difficult lighting conditions.

Performance-wise, the G4 is powered by a six-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor and 3GB RAM, and will be running on Android 5.1 Lollipop. Notably, the G4's 808 processor is a step-down from Qualcomm's flagship octa-core 810 processor, which LG used in the G Flex 2. It's possible that the slightly less powerful 808 will result in better battery life, but for now that remains to be seen.

Speaking of battery life, the G4 is powered by a 3,000mAh capacity removable battery, making one of the few remaining removable battery flagships available. In fact, LG will be promoting this fact by giving Singapore customers a free additional 3,000mAh capacity battery and a battery charger when they buy the G4 from any authorized LG retailer (while stocks last).

Storage-wise, you're looking at 32GB internal storage, and a microSD slot up to 128GB.

The LG G4 will be available at the end of May, retailing for S$998 (Genuine Leather) and S$928 (Metallic) from M1, Singtel, StarHub and authorized LG Mobile retailers. Consumers can register their interest at the websites of the respective telecommunication companies from 15 May 2015 to 24 May 2015.
