LG is reportedly the supplier of an important component for the iPhone 8

While Samsung is reportedly the main supplier of OLED panels for the iPhone 8, LG Innotek is said to be the sole supplier of the facial recognition camera modules for the iPhone 8.

According to the Korea Economic Daily, LG Innotek plans to build a new facility worth US$238.5 million to fulfill Apple's orders of the camera modules. The facial recognition camera module will be front-facing and is rumored to be more advanced than Samsung's 2D camera on the Galaxy S8.

It was reported last year that Apple and LG were working to develop a smartphone camera module with 3D photographing. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo followed up with his own report that the camera module would be supplied by Sony and it would be a "revolutionary" 3D-sensing front camera. The implementation of this camera module alongside the advanced algorithms may help Apple stay ahead of the competition for a few years.
