LG reportedly signed deal with Apple to supply LCD and OLED panels
LG Display has reportedly signed a deal with Apple to supply panels for the upcoming iPhone models.
According to Korean publication Newspin, LG Display is likely to supply about 20 million LCD panels and three to four million OLED panels for Apple this year. The report also claims that LG Display has a high chance of securing the majority of 6.5-inch OLED panels orders for 2019.
LG’s investment in OLED facilities appears to have paid off; the company revealed plans to invest $13.5 billion over the next few years for producing flexible OLED and large-size OLED displays.
If this report is true, Apple would have secured a second supplier of OLED panels and diversify its supply chain. As LG ramps up its OLED production in the coming months, Apple will be in a better position to negotiate with Samsung for more attractive prices so as to lower production costs of the iPhone. This is especially critical for Apple as it is rumoured to be moving to an all-OLED iPhone lineup in 2019.
