Flip phones are making a gradual comeback into the global consumer market as LG today announced the international debut of its flip phone, the Wine Smart.

The Wine Smart is essentially the global variant of the LG Gentle, which was launched last month in the Korean market. According to LG, the positive response of last year's model encouraged the company to invest in more advanced multimedia features in this year's product. Below is a list of its specs:

  • 3.2-inch display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels
  • 1.1GHz quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
  • 4GB internal storage with microSD support
  • 3-megapixel rear camera
  • VGA front-facing camera
  • 4G LTE support
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Removable 1,700mAh battery
  • 117.7 x 58.7 x 16.6mm
  • 143g

For readers who are too young to have used or seen a flip phone before, a typical flip phone comes with a numeric keypad. For the Wine Smart, it has a large 3x4 keypad with hotkeys for instant access to frequently used functions such as camera.

LG - “Our goal with LG Wine Smart was to create a smartphone that fans of flip phones could embrace,” said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications Company. “Consumers shouldn’t have to miss out on the smartphone revolution because they prefer a particular phone design over another. With LG Wine Smart, they won’t have to.”

The Wine Smart will be available later this month in selected countries such as France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Kazakhstan and Japan. Samsung also launched an Android-powered flip phone, the Galaxy Folder last month. Unlike the Wine Smart, the Galaxy Folder is likely to be sold in South Korea only.
