LG Display rumoured to be developing OLED panels for the Apple iPad Pro

The Apple 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2021) is the first iPad to sport a mini-LED display.

Apple's future iPad Pros could be using OLED panels.

Sources told TheElec that LG Display is developing two models of OLED panels for Apple. The models are said to be 11-inch and 12.9-inch. While LG Display is expected to be the exclusive supplier of the 12.9-inch panel, Apple will split the supply of 11-inch panels between LG Display and Samsung Display.

Unlike the display panel supply chain for the iPhone where Samsung Display is dominant, LG Display has a strategic edge over its rival as it has more experience in making OLED panels with a two-stack tandem structure. With two emission layers, two-stack tandem OLED panels deliver twice the brightness and four times the lifespan of single-stack OLED panels.

Earlier this year, Korea IT News reported that LG Display plans to double the production of its 6th generation OLED panels. The first OLED iPads are expected to arrive in late 2023 or 2024. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the first OLED iPad is unlikely to be an iPad Air due to concerns about quality and costs.
