Lenovo will pre-install Microsoft Office, OneDrive, and Skype on its Android devices

Microsoft and Lenovo have recently announced a “deepening” of their strategic relationship. In addition to a patent cross-licensing agreement that covers Lenovo and Motorola devices, this expanded collaboration also includes Lenovo agreeing to install Microsoft’s productivity apps - including Microsoft Office, OneDrive, and Skype - on select Android devices that the Motorola owner makes.

Faced with strong competition both inside and outside of China, Lenovo has in the past year found it tough to gain traction in the smartphone market. And while it remains a top PC maker, the continued decline of PC sales means the company is now struggling on more than one front. In short, this collaboration with Microsoft may just be one of the ways to stay competitive and cut cost in the short run.

For Microsoft, the benefit is clear: it presents an opportunity to get more people, especially Lenovo customers in Asia, to use its apps. The Windows 10 maker isn’t new to such partnerships either. Before this, it has already inked many similar deals with Asian Android OEMs, including Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, Sony, ASUS, and Acer.
