Leica has a new Monochrom camera. Meet the new Q2 Monochrom.

The Q2 Monochrom is essentially a Q2 camera with some design tweaks and only shoots in black-and-white.

To match the photo that it takes, the Q2 Monochrom has a matching monochrome aesthetic. Gone is the iconic red Leica dot and all you have are some white text and monochrome etchings around the camera. It also has an IP52 weather-resistance rating.

Behind the camera is a 3-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1.04M dots. The EVF is OLED and has a resolution of 3.68M dots.

The fixed lens is unchanged and it's the Summilux f/1.7 with a 28mm focal length. If you need something tighter, the Q2 Monochrom has a built-in digital teleconverter that shoots in 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm, but at the cost of resolution. A macro mode lets you focus from as close as 17cm.

The Q2 Monochrom's 47-megapixel full-frame sensor is mostly similar to the standard Q2. However, the omission of the colour filter array has allowed Leica to increase its sensitivity. Leica says it can capture up to 13 stops of light (2 more than the standard Q2) and it's ISO range is from 100 to 100,000.

The Q2 Monochrom is available to order now from the Leica online store. And like the standard Q2, the Q2 Monochrom has a hefty price tag. In fact, at S$8,950, it's even pricier than the standard Q2 (S$7,750).

If you are new to Leica, it's hard to imagine paying so much more to shoot only in black-and-white. However, there's something about the photos that Leica's Monochrom cameras produce that is so appealing to enthusiasts.
