In a surprise twist, this could be one of the best Star Wars games yet.

Warner Bros. Games’ new gameplay overview trailer for Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has finally revealed its release date: 5 April, 2022. This game serves as a comprehensive celebration of the entire franchise, letting you play through all nine mainline movies with over 300 characters to unlock.

Watch the trailer below:

The Skywalker Saga seems to provide a refreshing change in the Lego game formula, starting with a new over-the-shoulder perspective that brings the camera much closer to the action. Combat has been improved with new combos and abilities, and sidequests are now a little deeper than level-wide collectathons. The game also has a cover system, and a skill tree-like upgrade system that uses collectible ‘Kyber Bricks’ found throughout the main saga. So yes, there’s still quite a bit of collecting involved.

If you’re a big Star Wars fan, the biggest sell here might be that players get to explore 23 planets from the franchise, each with their own unique aesthetics, NPCs and sidequests. In Free Play mode, you can simply wander about the galaxy (on land and in space) using one of over 300 unlockable characters.

This looks like developer TT Games’ most ambitious game yet - but according to a recent report from Polygon, it came at the cost of a deeply troubled development cycle. Sources speaking to Polygon claim the studio suffers from extensive crunch culture, harassment, bullying, gender inequality, problematic tech and overtime issues.

The report states that improvements have been made at the studio just recently, but it is a shame that a game like this had to come at such a high cost to its creators.
