Would you look at that? My favourite film of 2019 is getting a sequel.

Knives Out, the murder-mystery with more than a couple twists, is getting a sequel according to writer-director Rian Johnson. The film might turn into an entirely new franchise for Lionsgate, just like John Wick did.

Johnson informed The Hollywood Reporter last weekend that he was already working on a sequel to Knives Out, centered on Daniel Craig’s detective character - Benoit Blanc. The new film would have him investigate an entirely new case, probably with an all-new ensemble cast. Johnson was apparently eager to make the sequel quickly, within the next year at least.

According to Johnson’s producing partner Ram Bergman, Craig was equally excited to come back for a sequel. “Daniel had so much fun doing it, and he wants to do more,” he said.

This would be very similar to 20th Century Fox’s current adaptation of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery novels. Back in 2017, they released Murder on the Orient Express, and in 2020 they will release Death on the Nile, with Kenneth Branagh returning as Hercule Poirot to solve another crime.

Turning Knives Out into a franchise is practically a no-brainer for Lionsgate, though. The film has become a critical darling, picking up nominations left and right - but it has been a financial success as well. It's made almost US$250 million on a US$40 million budget, making it quite the lucrative option for a movie franchise.
