Kia to mass produce battery-electric PBVs in second half of 2025
Kia recently announced it has started building a dedicated plant for electric purpose-built vehicles (PBVs).
The company shared that it will invest around one trillion won (~US$758 million) to secure 99,000 acres of land for the new PBV plant. Kia says it plans to start mass production of PBVs in the second half of 2025 with plans for 150,000 units in the first year.
The first model in Kia's dedicated PBV lineup is known by its project name, SW. It is a mid-sized PBV and will be based on the "eS" platform, which is a dedicated skateboard platform for battery electric PBVs. In the future, Kia will expand its product lineup to large-sized PBVs that can be used for logisticsm fresh food delivery, multi-seat shuttles, mobile offices, stores and mid-sized robotaxis.
