Kevin Lynch is reportedly leading the Apple Car project
Apple has reportedly appointed a new team lead for its Apple Car project.
Bloomberg claims Kevin Lynch, the VP of technology at Apple, is taking over the role of Doug Field on the electric vehicle (EV) project. Field left Apple to join Ford as its chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer.
Sources told Bloomberg that Lynch started working on the EV project earlier this year with the focus on software. However, he is said to be now managing the hardware engineering and the work on self-driving car sensors. As Lynch's expertise is on software, Bloomberg believes Apple's focus for the EV project is on the underlying software and self-driving technology.
Despite Lynch lacking experience in the auto industry, Apple has "a few senior managers still on the project that come from the automotive world". These industry veterans probably include two former Mercedes engineers, former Telsa VP and Aston Chief Engineer Chris Porritt, and Porsche's former VP of chassis development Dr Manfred Harrer.
