Kandao uses AI to turn regular videos into super slo-motion ones

Note: This article was first published on 22nd April 2019.

Remember the free software tool that uses computational photography techniques to improve your low light pictures in post? Kandao has just developed a new algorithm called ‘AI Slow-motion’ that’s able to slow down footage by up to 10 times, turning your regular 30fps footage into 300fps super slow motion video.

As you can see from the video below, the result is much smoother than playing back the regular video at a slower speed. That’s because the motion between frames in the footage is analyzed and filled in by Kandao’s neural network.

Slow-motion offers possibilities to capture special moments in an epic way, but not all camera can do it. The high-fps camera is very expensive, as it requires large memories and is data-intensive, which is even more challenging for 360-degree cameras with multiple lenses.

Dan Chen, Kandao CEO.

The feature will work on regular footage and slow-motion footage, and of course with 360o video too, but only with Kandao’s own Obsidian and QooCam cameras. For example, a 360-degree video originally captured at 8k 30fps can be transferred into a 240fps slow-motion in 8K. The following clip is an example of video captured in 4K slowed down to 1200fps.

QooCam Studio with the AI Slow Motion feature is available for download now.

Kandao Studio V3.0 will be available to download from 23 April 2019.
