iPhone SE teardown reveals many parts identical to iPhone 5S

Teardown of iPhone SE.

iFixit’s teardown of the iPhone SE revealed a series of similarities between the new Apple smartphone and the old iPhone 5S.

The iPhone SE’s display is identical to one found on the older iPhone 5S. iFixit's teardown video said that fitment, connectors, and functionality “are the same”, and Ars Technica said that getting the iPhone SE means skipping out on all the minor improvements that Apple gave to the iPhone 6s or 6s Plus’s display.

Other parts on the iPhone SE that are exchangeable with the iPhone 5S include the vibrating element, speaker assembly, and SIM card tray.

The iPhone SE's battery connector is not the same one used in the 5S.

The iPhone SE’s battery capacity sits at 1624mAh, which is slightly larger than the iPhone 5S’s 1560mAh battery. You cannott easily replace the iPhone SE’s battery using the 5S’s – both batteries use different connectors for their respective devices.

If you recall, the iPhone SE got a boost to its rear camera, going up to 12-megapixels. The teardown showed that the rear camera’s pixel pitch size also went down – the 5S had a pixel pitch of 1.5 micrometers, whereas the iPhone SE’s rear camera had a pixel pitch of 1.22-micrometers.

A silicone seal surrounds some parts within the iPhone SE's logic board connectors.

The iPhone SE logic board connectors had some silicone seal that surrounds some areas. The front camera, volume controls, and rear camera connectors received the waterproofing treatment. The LCD, digitizer (the touch panel fused under the glass display), battery, and Lightning connector does not have the silicone seal.

The teardown folks find that the iPhone SE has a reparability of 6/10, since the display and battery are easy to replace, despite not being user-replaceable. You can watch their video below for more information:
