iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro come with 2GB RAM

The 21 March 2016 Apple keynote did not announce the RAM size of the devices.

The first sets of the new iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro finally started making it rounds, and the new devices sport 2GB RAM each.

According to Ars Technica, Apple distributed sets of the iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro to journalists after the 21 March Apple Keynote event. The distributed sets revealed the RAM size of the new devices, while the prior keynote event itself did not mention the RAM size at all (in the same style as the iPhone 6s announcement).

This is likely to be good news for iPhone SE users-to-be, since it has the same amount of RAM found in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus despite its lower price and smaller size. On the other hand, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro has half the RAM of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro – the bigger counterpart comes with 4GB RAM.

The iOS platform was generally designed to be effective at processing even with small RAM size for power, so having 2GB RAM would be relatively sufficient on these new devices. However, the iPad Pro line-up was also designed as a possible replacement for work laptops (as mentioned in the Apple 21 March keynote itself). Having smaller RAM sizes would mean that the device needs to “eject” the app or browser tab more frequently from its memory bank in order stay at the top of its game, making it less ideal for work-related multi-tasking.

Not all is lost, since the 9.7-inch iPad Pro has plenty of plus points to it, as detailed in our list of nuanced changes between the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
